The problem is that there is no one single ab exercise that will work best. If you think that it exists then you are going to be very disapointed. When working out the obliques you need to do exercises such as twisting crunches and side crunches. It's strongly advised to carry out these crunches on a Swiss ball because you'll get twice the benefit and truly helps with core strength.
If you're looking for spinal stability, you'll find that the transverses abdominis provides this. The plank, stomach vacuum and pelvic tilts will help greatly. For the stomach vacuum basically it's all about holding your stomach in for prolonged periods of time.
Many people who know very little about fitness will go straight into the gym and start pumping iron without warming up. This is how injuries occur and you should avoid these injuries by warming up first. You can do this by going on a treadmill, exercise bike or elliptical trainer for about 10 minutes. Then you should do about 10 minutes of stretching exercises to stretch out all those muscles. Paying a personal trainer to help you out is well worth the money. You should also find someone who can test out how supple your muscles are before you do doing anything too strenous.
Sure, there are all sorts of weird and wonderful gadgets being sold today claiming to give you a slimmer, trimmer waistline. But the fact is that there are many exercises you can do without any money whatsover. However investing in a relatively cheap Swiss ball and DVD is something that will truly be of benefit to you.
