Often we are pretty happy with other parts of our bodies but for whatever reason, our bellies are letting us down. If you are like most people and want to achieve a flat stomach you are going to have to learn about health and fitness along with the many mistakes that people make each and every day.

When it comes to dieting people are totally and utterly confused by the vast array of diet books the hit the shelves every year. Just when you thought that a particular diet was the answer some other author comes along and not. One thing is for sure, you need to reduce the amounts of bad fat in your diet. Notice the word "bad". In other words, not all fat is bad for you and actually, if you don't consume enough of certain fats you can end up with terrible problems such as dry flaky skin and brittle nails. The kind of fat that is bad for you is lard and hydrogenated fat whilst the kind of fat that is healthy for you is olive oil, sunflower oil, walnut oil, flax oil and such like. You should learn more about what fats you include in your diet and what fats to stay well away from.

You should also cut drastically the amount of carbohydrate that is in your diet. This means potatoes, bread and pasta. This just means you should eat sweet potatoes, brown rice and cous cous instead. Try and eat wholegrain bread and better still, make it yourself so you know exactly what you are putting into it.

Strength training is essential in addition to the changes you are making to your diet. Ideally you will be wanting to work out your whole body but making sure to include good exercises that focus on the abs. So this will mean using dumbells, barbells etc. Learn to use a Swiss ball too as all the top fitness experts agree that this is a really great addition to any workout regime and for those who want to shrink stomach fat with exercise

Don't forget to do some cardio work too. This don't mean doing a marathon but it could be that you do an aerobics class/DVD, 30 minutes on an exercise bike, elliptical trainer or rowing machine. This should be carried out a few times a week and normally on the days that you aren't doing any weight lifting.

Another point to make is that if you're going to be doing plenty of exercise you need to also warm up in the shape of stretching. There are books that give really good instructions on how to stretch all the main parts of the body. One book that comes highly recommended is Sport Stretch: 311 Stretches for 41 Sports. Many people don't realize the importance of stretching and end up getting injuries.
