The best thing that you can do is to try out a varity of exercises along with greatly improving your diet. Cardio work also shouldn't be overlooked because you are wanting to get rid of fat whilst also building msucle - this will help you get a flat stomach.

When looking at exercises to work out your abs you should understand the different muscles which as internal and external obliques plus transverses abdominis and rectus abdominis.

In terms of the oblique muscles, you'll find that these are the ones that run down each side of your trunk. Having strong oblique muscles will help you have a good posture. When working out the obliques you need to do exercises such as twisting crunches and side crunches. It's strongly advised to carry out these crunches on a Swiss ball because you'll get twice the benefit and truly helps with core strength.

If you're looking for spinal stability, you'll find that the transverses abdominis provides this. The plank, stomach vacuum and pelvic tilts will help greatly. For the stomach vacuum basically it's all about holding your stomach in for prolonged periods of time.

Many people who know very little about fitness will go straight into the gym and start pumping iron without warming up. This is how injuries occur and you should avoid these injuries by warming up first. You can do this by going on a treadmill, exercise bike or elliptical trainer for about 10 minutes. Then you should do about 10 minutes of stretching exercises to stretch out all those muscles. Paying a personal trainer to help you out is well worth the money. You should also find someone who can test out how supple your muscles are before you do doing anything too strenous.

Sure, there are all sorts of weird and wonderful gadgets being sold today claiming to give you a slimmer, trimmer waistline. But the fact is that there are many exercises you can do without any money whatsover. However investing in a relatively cheap Swiss ball and DVD is something that will truly be of benefit to you.
When most people are young they have perfectly flat stomachs. But then before you know it, the weight starts to pile on and you end up with a beer belly. The problem is that it's very easy to put the weight on but when it comes to taking it off things aren't quite so simple. Unfortunately there are so many diet myths out there it can leave us feeling utterly confused. Then of course there are all those companies trying to sell us diet pills that probably don't work at all and in worst case cenarios can actually do more harm than good. You certainly won't acheive a flat stomach.

Myth #1 All Fats Are Bad: If you have been thinking for all these years that fat makes you fat you have been severly misled. Sure, there are many different fats that are are very harmful such as transfats which you find in most greasy foods like fries, burgers and potato chips. These kinds of fats should be avoided, not just so you can flatten your stomach but also for the sake of your health. Fats that are really goods for you include flax seed, sunflower, pumpkin and olive oil.

Myth #2 All Carbs Make You Fat. Just like fat, there are some carbs that are good for you and some that aren't. White bread, pasta and potatoes are all carbs that are generally bad for you because they have a high glycemic index. If you are looking to lose weight you should seek out carbs that have a low or medium glycemic index such as baked beans, sweet potatoes and brown rice.

Myth #3 All Carbs Give You Energy. Some people think that carbs are really good and give you energy which is true up to a certain point. However they also tend to release sugar into your body too quickly which means you get a sugar high followed by a sugar low. When one person eats a meal of carbohydrate they will normally feel tired aftwerwards whereas a person eating protein will not feel tired.

Myth #4 You Don't Need To Exercise. It seems that many weight loss clubs focus so much on reducing calories and there is very little talked about in terms of exercising. This really should be addressed because building up muscle allows you to burn off more calories even when you are just sitting around doing nothing. If you talk to a body builder about what they eat you will be amazed at how much they eat simply because they burn so much of it off whilst lifting weights and doing cardio.

So ultimately, if you are aiming to flatten your stomach you need to know the difference between good and fad fats, carbs and the fact that you do actually need to exercise.
Often we are pretty happy with other parts of our bodies but for whatever reason, our bellies are letting us down. If you are like most people and want to achieve a flat stomach you are going to have to learn about health and fitness along with the many mistakes that people make each and every day.

When it comes to dieting people are totally and utterly confused by the vast array of diet books the hit the shelves every year. Just when you thought that a particular diet was the answer some other author comes along and not. One thing is for sure, you need to reduce the amounts of bad fat in your diet. Notice the word "bad". In other words, not all fat is bad for you and actually, if you don't consume enough of certain fats you can end up with terrible problems such as dry flaky skin and brittle nails. The kind of fat that is bad for you is lard and hydrogenated fat whilst the kind of fat that is healthy for you is olive oil, sunflower oil, walnut oil, flax oil and such like. You should learn more about what fats you include in your diet and what fats to stay well away from.

You should also cut drastically the amount of carbohydrate that is in your diet. This means potatoes, bread and pasta. This just means you should eat sweet potatoes, brown rice and cous cous instead. Try and eat wholegrain bread and better still, make it yourself so you know exactly what you are putting into it.

Strength training is essential in addition to the changes you are making to your diet. Ideally you will be wanting to work out your whole body but making sure to include good exercises that focus on the abs. So this will mean using dumbells, barbells etc. Learn to use a Swiss ball too as all the top fitness experts agree that this is a really great addition to any workout regime and for those who want to shrink stomach fat with exercise

Don't forget to do some cardio work too. This don't mean doing a marathon but it could be that you do an aerobics class/DVD, 30 minutes on an exercise bike, elliptical trainer or rowing machine. This should be carried out a few times a week and normally on the days that you aren't doing any weight lifting.

Another point to make is that if you're going to be doing plenty of exercise you need to also warm up in the shape of stretching. There are books that give really good instructions on how to stretch all the main parts of the body. One book that comes highly recommended is Sport Stretch: 311 Stretches for 41 Sports. Many people don't realize the importance of stretching and end up getting injuries.

This is of course not a comprehansive guide, however you should now have enough information to do further research so that you can achieve a flatter stomach in no time at all.
